I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change!

Many years ago I was in New York and noticed an advert for an Off-Broadway musical called “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.”

I always smile when I think of that title, as it expresses the challenge of relationship so succinctly. We want and need other people so badly, and yet they can be so irritating!

I’ve just been working on a little collection of stories for children on the theme of Acceptance, and each one of these stories features protagonists learning this heart-wrenching skill, in various different ways.

Acceptance means letting go of your own judgements and your resistance to what life is presenting you with. It means relaxing into what is and that is a movement that leads to a more vivid and authentic way of living, with others as well as with oneself: “I love you, you’re perfect… thank you.”

I call these little story collections Story Boxes and there are currently nine of them on Palace of Stories, my site of stories for children. Each one is grouped around a specific theme such as Finding Your Gift, Inner Strength and Connecting to Nature. Stories are one of the most powerful ways that children can discover their own inner resources and the beauty of the world around them.

Lately I’ve been working on a reboot of that site, and have added a new streaming option which allows you to listen to all 100+ stories for a month for just £5. I’ve also included several folk tales, from the days before I started telling intuitive stories, each one richly retold with a musical soundtrack. You can read more about those stories here.

If you know a parent who is wondering how to survive the summer holidays without resorting to endless screen time, perhaps you could pass this blog onto them?
